Travel Quote #01
“Everyone has their own Pacific to cross”
– The Coxless Crew
In 2015, a group of four women calling themselves, “The Coxless Crew,” set out to row across the Pacific Ocean from America to Australia. By themselves. Unaided. For 8,446 miles. A documentary called, “Losing Sight of Shore,” was created to immortalize their adventure. The tagline of their journey was, “Everyone has their own Pacific to cross,” which immediately made me wonder, “What’s my Pacific?” Food for thought. Check out their documentary here!
Travel Quote #02
“No place is as bad as they tell you it’s going to be”
– Chuck Thompson
Travel Quote #03
“Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.”
– Jennifer Lee
Travel Quote #05
“The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.”
– Anna Quindlen
It’s easy to fall into a thought-trap when planning a big change in your life. To look at the current life you’re living and think, “Well, I’ve been working here for years. It’s too late to do something I’ve always wanted to do, like quit my job to travel the world.” Sometimes, all it takes is little bravery and a, “F*ck it,” to make that change.
Travel Quote #06
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”
– Helen Keller
Travel Quote #07
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
– Gustav Flaubert
It’s easy to get feeling like the master of your world when that world only exists within a 30-mile radius. I’ve definitely been guilty of that. It becomes easy to navigate on autopilot, and that’s when you let interesting people or new experiences pass you by. As soon as you set foot in another country, the simplest thing becomes an adventure. Dangerous, even. Going to a grocery store where no one spoke English made my heart race more than any roller coaster I’ve been on. Now, go learn just how tiny you really are.
Travel Quote #08
“Drink heavily with locals whenever possible.”
– Anthony Bourdain
Travel Quote #09
All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”
– Martin Buber
When backpacking long-term, your travels rarely end up the way you expect. Finding a neat coffee shop could derail your daily itinerary. Meeting a cool group of friends can convince you to stay on an island in Thailand for an extra month. If you give yourself the flexibility, your travels will be full of these secret destinations you never accounted for.
Travel Quote #11
“You earn your knowledge of a city by walking it.”
– A German guy I met in England
I met a kind, but quiet, German fellow in my hostel in Cambridge. In our talks, he mentioned how he rarely takes public transit. He said that when you walk, you slow down. You observe more. And, after a day or two of gettin lost in a new city, you feel as if you know it. This is one of my favorite travel quotes and I immediately adopted his way of thinking. My feet didn’t thank me.
Travel Quote #12
“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends.”
– Cesare Pavese
Travel Quote #13
“If in doubt, just walk until your day becomes interesting.”
– Rolf Potts
This is one of my favorite travel quotes from the OG vagabond, Rolf Potts. He wrote the book, Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel. which is one of the best travel books out there. This quote is the quintessential thing I tell my friends when they ask what I did on a daily basis. “Walk.” Eventually, you’ll meet someone or find something that interests you.
Travel Quote #14
“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all — the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.”
– Randy Komisar
Travel Quote #15
“TRAVEL IS GLAMOROUS ONLY IN RETROSPECT.”
– Paul Theroux
Travel Quote #16
“TO TRAVEL IS TO DISCOVER THAT EVERYONE IS WRONG ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES.”
– Aldous Huxley
Travel Quote #18
“The journey is part of the experience — an expression of the seriousness of one’s intent.”
– Anthony Bourdain
This is the absolute truth. I’ve met plenty of travelers who are on the road for a particular purpose. It’s one thing to set out with an end goal in mind, but it’s another thing entirely to set out in pursuit of the journey itself. I would go even further to say that the journey IS the experience.
Travel Quote #19
“The most vivid travel experiences usually find you by accident.”
– Rolf Potts
Travel Quote #21
“IF YOUR SHIP DOESN’T COME IN, SWIM OUT TO IT.”
– Johnathan Winters
Travel Quote #23
“WHEN YOU WANT SOMETHING, ALL THE UNIVERSE CONSPIRES IN HELPING YOU TO ACHIEVE IT.”
– Paulo Coelho
This isn’t specifically a travel quote, but it’s an excerpt from one of my favorite books of all time, The Alchemist. It basically is telling you that if you have a dream, you can’t wait for it to just fall in your lap. You have to do something to move towards that goal. Anything. The act of doing will present you with opportunities to move yourself even closer towards achieving what you want.
Travel Quote #25
“Of all the adventures and challenges that wait on the vagabonding road, the most difficult can be the act of coming home.”
– Rolf Potts
This is one of my favorite travel quotes because it’s the one that’s hit me the hardest. I didn’t know how difficult it would be to come home, especially when my trip around the world ended so abruptly. It took a long time to get used to being back home. To get used to living in a house and having privacy. But being home and having time to think has given me, it’s a burning desire to get back on the road and the confidence that I can live literally anywhere. If that sounds like something you want, then you need to go for it. Trust me.
